Globalisation, Consumption and development

As part of the activities of

• the WOTRO (Netherlands Foundation for Tropical Research, a division of the Netherlands Research Foundation NWO) national programme on Globalisation and the Construction of Communal Identities
• the Leiden African Studies Centre theme group on globalisation, and
• the 'European Interuniversity Development Opportunities Study-Group' (EIDOS),

an international conference was organised, entitled: 'Globalisation, development and the making of consumers: Or what are collective identities for' (The Hague, March 13-16, 1997). The conveners were Wim van Binsbergen, Professor Richard Fardon (Centre for African Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies, London, United Kingdom), and Dr Rijk van Dijk (African Studies Centre, Leiden). The publication of the book based on the conference is imminent.
