3 A summary of Western (Ptolemaean) astrology unpublished, first drafted 1994 If, as Ibn Khaldun has argued, Islamic geomancy is simply adulterated astrology, emerged at a time when astrologers no longer commanded the complex astronomic knowledge needed to calculate the position of celestial moments at the moment of birth or some later moment in their client's life, then we cannot discuss that branch of geomancy without at least basic understanding of astrology. The Islamic astrology that went into Islamic geomancy, originated in Ancient Mesopotamia, further developed in Egypt, and took full fruition in Hellenistic Greece, and had its authoritative formulations in Late Graeco-Roman Antiquity (mainly by Ptolemy) before being passed on to India, the Islamic world, Medieval Europe, etc. The present two-page summary provides a useful overview of basic concepts and relationships in Western / Ptolemaean astrology.
